In a candid interview Selena, 21, appeared to hint that she was aware the singer - who admitted to smoking marijuana and taking prescription drugs - was going through something
Speaking about Justin she said: 'Part of life and growing up are going through things that aren't comfortable - and you hope you come out the other side a stronger person.'
And her comments couldn't be any more timely as the 19-year-old is facing the prospect of jail or rehab following his arrest on Thursday.
'I will always care about Justin no matter what - my instinct after all we have been through is to protect him from any harm,' she added.
Selena's support will most surely be tested, as the young singer has come under even more intense scrutiny following his wild behaviour in Miami Beach.
And this comes after he spent $75,000 making it rain in a strip, and his close friend Lil Za was arrested for drug possession.
Justin and Selena were last seen together riding Segways earlier this month near his Calabasas home soon after Selena quit her tour, a year after their highly publicised split following a turbulent two-year relationship.
Their reunion came just weeks after Selena was said to be in a 'bad place' as she was still struggling to come to terms with their split.
The singer and actress looked healthy and happy at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this week, and although she was promoting her new film Rudderless, however it seems Justin is never far from her mind.
When asked about her troubled ex who has been at the centre of a number of incidents of late, she said: 'Whatever he is going through, I want to see him come out the other side stronger.'
